How does homeowners insurance through the Illinois FAIR Plan work?

The FAIR Plan is funded by property insurers licensed to operate in Illinois. Coverage is available for homes, condominiums, renters, rental dwellings and commercial properties.

The home must meet basic fire, loss prevention and safety standards and be located in Illinois. Vacant or unoccupied dwellings are not eligible for he FAIR Plan. You must also confirm unsuccessful attempts to get coverage from traditional insurers.

Similar to traditional homeowners policies, the FAIR Plan covers dwellings, outbuildings, contents and personal liability. There will be an onsite inspection to confirm the property meets FAIR Plan standards.

Identify specific issues that are making it difficult to insure your home. Request a high deductible, improve your loss record, address property deficiencies and make other recommended changes. In time you will have options in the traditional market and pay less for insurance.
