Are You Prepared for an Earthquake?

Strong earthquakes are sudden, unexpected and often cause serious damage. Individuals that know how to protect themselves are more likely to avoid personal injury. Consider the following tips:

  • Seek shelter inside your home or nearby building until the shaking stops. Stay away from power lines, trees, streetlights and overpasses.
  • Drop to the ground. Choose a spot away from windows, doors, light fixtures and unsecured furniture that may fall.
  • Take cover under a sturdy table or desk to avoid being hit by falling objects.
  • Thoroughly check your home for damage when it is safe to move about again. Confirm gas, water and electric systems are safe to use. Examine chimney and brick work.
